The British Geological Survey has reported that an earth tremor centred near Cowgill occurred on 25th February at around 5pm. It measured only 1.7 on the Richter scale, and was at a depth of 3000m (over four times the height of nearby Whernside) and it is therefore unlikely that anyone noticed. The tremor was one of about 40 ‘earthquakes’ around the UK recorded by the British Geological Survey since the beginning of the year. Further details can be seen on their website by clicking here.
