Getting to Dentdale by bus

Western Dales Bus have announced important amendments to all their timetables for the summer starting in June. The changes are a result of the major changes to the Settle-Carlisle rail timetable. As a result, there is going be a short period in late May and June when the bus will not connect very well with trains at Dent Station. Jock Cairns, Chair or Western Dales Bus has released a statement explaining the changes.
“At Western Dales Bus, we always try to design our bus routes so that wherever possible they connect with rail services. So as well as providing public transport between Sedbergh, Dent, Kendal, Kirby Stephen and Hawes, this means people can connect with trains at Oxenholme and at stations on the Settle-Carlisle line. However, this year we’ve had a problem.

As you may know, from May 20th the Settle-Carlisle timetable will be changing considerably. More trains will be calling at local stations at quite different times from previously. This means that in order to continue to make connections with these trains, we’re having to change all our timetables too.

To do this involves a lot of work behind the scenes by a team of people, and includes:
• Devising timetables which suit our passengers and which we can deliver with the number of volunteer drivers we have
• Obtaining legal approval from the Traffic Commissioner (this takes at least four weeks)
• Designing and printing timetable leaflets
• Distributing the leaflets throughout Sedbergh, Dent, Kendal, Kirkby Stephen and elsewhere.

In the past, we’ve had enough time to do everything we need to do because new rail timetables have been published well in advance, usually by early in the New Year at the latest. Unfortunately, however, this year the summer rail timetable was not finally confirmed by Northern Rail until April 6th, which means that we don’t have the time to finalise our timetables in time to implement them when the rail timetable changes.

Instead, our summer timetable will start this year in June, not May, and our buses will continue to run on the present timetable until then. As a result, there is going be a short period in late May and June when we will be arriving at Dent, Garsdale and Kirkby Stephen stations at times that don’t connect very well with trains.

In the meantime, please visit our website for the most up-to-date timetable information.”
