DENTDALE    In the Yorkshire Dales National Park

Dee Side House

DEE SIDE HOUSE
formerly Dent Youth Hostel

Further information on Dee Side House will be available shortly

In a beautiful location high up Dentdale, Deeside House is a 19th Century shooting lodge. It is a listed building and was a Youth Hostel from 1944 until 2006

In the Area
Dent village is situated five miles down the Dentdale valley. This quaint village, once famous for its knitting, comprises old houses grouped around the narrow cobbled streets with cafes, shops, post office and pubs. The dale is rich in caves and waterfalls and is a Geologist's delight with examples of limestone beds, fossils and Dent marble. White Scar caves - site of England's biggest cave - are only 8 miles away and are open to the public with guided tours all year round.

Along the fells of the upper Dentdale valley runs the Settle to Carlisle railway, the country's finest and highest scenic main line. During the summer, special steam hauled charters run several times a month, crossing viaducts and sweeping through tunnels. Only a few minutes walk from the Dee Side House is the impressive Arten Gill viaduct - the piers of which plunge 50ft into the ground in search of solid rock.

Dee Side House is ideally situated on the slopes of Whernside for those wishing to walk the "Three Peaks" of  Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. It is also on the route of the Dales Way, running from Ilkley to Windermere.

The Yorkshire Dales Cycleway
YHA Dentdale is an ideal place to stay for cyclists on the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway. The Cycleway is a circular route of approximately 215km through the best of the Dales scenery. Marked on OS maps and signposted, it is a popular route for exploring the Yorkshire Dales on a weeks cycling tour. An information pack, with route cards describing the Cycleway in six sections, is available from the National Park Visitor Centre at Malham. Tel: 01729 830363.

Caving
Local instructors provide introductory cave courses. There are plenty of caves and potholes to choose from in the surrounding area.

Climbing
Introductory courses are available locally and if the weather is bad, the Inglesport Climbing Wall at Ingleton is one of the best in the area.
