Dentdale is a timeless, peaceful dale to spend a relaxing
holiday, and is a perfect base for walking, cycling or
touring - by car or using the famous Settle Carlisle
railway. It is within easy reach of all the Yorkshire Dales,
the Eden Valley and much of the Lake District. There is an
outstanding variety of walks, from a rewarding fell walk to
the top of Whernside, one of the famous Yorkshire Three
Peaks, to a delightful riverside stroll along part of the
Dales Way, which passes through Dentdale.
|
|
In spring the daffodils brighten up the gardens and the
lambs frolic in the fields. In summertime the hedgerows and
hay meadows come alive with flowers and an evening stroll is
a delightful experience. Autumn brings an abundance of new
colours to the trees, and then winter arrives with its
bright frosty mornings and maybe even some snow. |

FURTHER INFORMATION ON DENTDALE
|
Dentdale is a hidden treasure waiting to be explored - a
secluded, tranquil dale in the Western Yorkshire Dales
National Park. The river Dee flows down the valley,
sometimes disappearing underground through cracks in the
limestone river bed where only cavers go. |
|

|
|

|
|
The lush green valley, with its stone walls, scattered
farmsteads and wild-flower hay meadows, is a haven for
wildlife. The peaceful valley, the open fells scattered with
sheep and the wild upland moorlands, the limestone and the
gritstone, provide a wide variety of wildlife habitats to
interest the naturalist, birdwatcher and geologist. |
|
 |
|
The lime kilns, bell pits of open cast coal-mining and the
old workings of the Dent marble industry remain, to remind
us of a rich and varied history. The well-known Settle
Carlisle railway line, completed in 1876, runs across the
head of the dale and over Denthead and Arten Gill Viaducts.
Trains stop daily at Dent station, the highest railway
station in England. Be green and leave your car at the
station and sit back and enjoy the magnificent Dales
scenery. |
|
Dent, with its white-washed cottages, cobbled streets and
beckoning alleyways, has a timeless quality and a long
history. it was the birthplace of Adam Sedgwick, the famous
geologist, who is commemorated by the Shap granite fountain
in the middle of the village, and by the Sedgwick Trail
which crosses the Dent Fault in Garsdale nearby. Dentdale
was also famous for its thriving hand-knitting industry and
for its Quaker connections. |

|
|
There is a rich culture in the dale which is home to many
craftspeople. There is a varied programme of events
throughout the year which visitors are welcome to attend.
Come for the Dentdale Run or the annual Dentdale Festival at
August Bank Holiday, which carries on ancient traditions and
is always popular. |
|
 |
You will be close to the centre of the village with its shops,
pubs and places to eat.
There is a children's playground is close by.
