LOCATION
The centre is in a room next to the Tower of St.
Andrew's Church. Although part of the church building,
it is completely separate from the worship area and has
it's own separate access. A new path has been laid in
the churchyard to provide full disabled access to the
room from the Main Street in the village.

ABOUT THE DISPLAY
The local community has donated a considerable
quantity of locally produced artwork, old photographs
and data.
The display panels include a village plan and history of
Dent village and linear plan and history of the Dale, an
Adam Sedgwick panel and a wild life and wild flowers
panel.
The information displayed here will shortly be put in
leaflet form for people to take away and explore
Dentdale, and will include more information than on the
panels. Included will be two local history trails and it
is hoped people will also patronise local businesses
along the way. |
The
centre displays edited highlights of Betty and
Elizabeth's "Terrible Knitters of Dent" video, now
solely owned by the PCC.
The installation process has had a minimal impact on the
structure of the room, but at the same time enhances and
illuminates the architecture of the room. |
AIM OF THE CENTRE
To provide Dentdale's many visitors with accessible
information about the Dale in a centrally located visitor
centre which is open all year round, encouraging the visitor
to linger in the Dale and enabling them to make decisions
about what they would like to see and do.
The Centre will be known as "Discover Dentdale" and will be
part of a wider strategy to promote the regeneration of the
tourist industry post 2001, and therefore acting as a catalyst
for new employment opportunities in tourism for the community.
MANAGEMENT
At present, the
project is overseen by a partnership of representatives from
St. Andrew' s Church, the Dent Business Forum, the Yorkshire
Dales National Park and the Hidden Britain Officer. The YDNPA
Rep and the Hidden Britain Officer only participate in an
advisory role, offering their expertise in a variety of
matters. The management team consists of the Vicar,
Churchwarden and Business Forum representatives. The Business
Forum will manage funding through their accounts, i.e receive
grant funding and make payments for expenditure on the
project. Funding for the project has come from the Hidden
Britain project, the Business Forum and the Yorkshire Dales
Millennium Trust.
