Aims and organizations

Students or would-be Students under the age of 25 years are invited to apply for grants.

They must have attended the Dent C of E Primary School or your parents must present live, full time, in the Parish of Dent with Cowgill.

Grants are made in respect of study at any School, University or Institution of Further or High Education approved for the purpose by the Governors. The money awarded may go towards, for example rooms, equipment, reasonable travel expenses, field courses and placement essential to the course of study. Governors have the powers of decision under the rules of the Charity.

The number and size of grants are decided in early summer when the year’s availability of funds is confirmed.

The Foundation obtains its income mainly by letting the two residential buildings and the five small parcels of land (four agricultural grassland and one a disused quarry site, at present also used for grazing) which it owns either solely or jointly with other charities, within the parish.   Income is also received from a further agricultural holding managed by Dent Combined Charities, from bank interest and from occasional donations.

To administer the property, to decide on the distribution of the net income and to conduct the other business of the Charity, quarterly meetings of Governors are held in village accommodation. The Clerkship is a voluntary post; an honorarium is paid.  The Clerk's expenses are reimbursed.

Report 2009- 2010

Wendy Cooke (Chair March 2009 to January 2010) writes

This has been a very busy and somewhat difficult year for the Foundation

In early spring the tenant from Flat 1 gave notice and we advised our agent. Mr Chris Whelan was asked to find a new client luckily this did not take long and has proved successful.

For various reasons we saw the resignation of three Governors, Brian Bannister,   Jock Cains and Ken McClurg. I would like to give my thanks for their work on the committee and at the same time welcome Heather Fraser, Ken Smith and Chris Evans who have kindly agreed to step into their shoe.

Also this year our long standing tenant from the Grammar School house moved out, this has given us the opportunity to refurbish the property. The project should be finished by spring 2010, thanks to Margaret Harrison our Clerk who has obtained extra funding from Cumbria Country Council and has over seen the work of the contractors. As committee members we are extremely grateful for her hard work and achievement.

Because the need to overhaul the Grammar school house, this year, we have been unable to give any educational grants which is sad, but it was important to restore the fabric of the house in order to secure income for the future. When the house is complete we should be able to ask for a higher rent than previous.

Ken Smith (Chair from January 2010) writes.

After a number of years Wendy relinquished the Chair, during her time she managed the day to day running of the Foundation when she was recovering from a serious illness. I joined the Foundation in October 2009 and was elected Chairman in January 2010.

The Grammar school house renovation was completed in May we spent over £32,000 to bring this house up to the correct standard for the 21st century it is now a very modern and welcoming house with three bedrooms two reception rooms and a good size kitchen, we are looking for a new tenant.

We have two flat in the Old Grammar School. We lost a tenant in January and this has enabled us to review the property and up grade top the correct standard. Our other tenant is very happy and we are very grateful for there support.

We have reviewed our costs and are looking at ways of maximising our assets for the future. We will also be looking at ways of increasing the profile of the Foundation in Dentdale in the coming months.
