DENTDALE    In the Yorkshire Dales National Park

History Society

History Society

The Society exists to encourage interest in and the study of the local history of Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent and the surrounding area. We hold a regular programme of talks, outings, social occasions and special events including exhibitions. These are backed up by original researches by members into the history of the district, some of which are published in the annual illustrated journal The Sedbergh Historian. Newsletters are produced quarterly and sent to all members.

Membership of the society is local, national and international, and now stands at over 300. Winter lectures are held on the first and third Wednesdays of every month, usually in Settlebeck High School. Summer outings vary from local walks to full day excursions.

There is a History Society room in the Community Office. Items available include:

  • Parish registers for Sedbergh, Garsdale, Dent, Howgill, Killington, Firbank and Orton
  • Censuses for Sedbergh, Dent, Garsdale, Killington, Middleton, Barbon, Casterton and Wensleydale
  • Graveyard recordings for Sedbergh, Dent, Garsdale, Cautley, Frostrow and Hawes

and many more items including Register of Electors, Hearth Tax, Garsdale Title Appointments and Marriage Bonds.
