Bus service to Dent Station

Changes to the popular Saturday service linking Dent Station, Dent village, Sedbergh and Kendal, operated by the volunteer run Western Dales Bus, start on Saturday 20th June.

The mid-morning bus from Dent to Sedbergh and Kendal will now depart the village at the earlier time of 9.50am rather than 10.35am.

The mid-afternoon Kendal to Dent village service (previously departing Kendal at 2.20pm) now departs at the much earlier time of 12.43pm. This service will not call at Oxenholme Station. However, the late afternoon service from Kendal to Dent village (and on to Dent Station) will leave just five minutes later than previously, at 4.20pm, and does serve Oxenholme Station.

The changes have been forced on Western Dales Bus by the new train timetable on the Settle-Carlisle line. “We want to enable visitors to come and enjoy Dentdale by maintaining connections with the new train timetable as well as continuing to provide the all-important Saturday service for locals”, explained Jock Cairns, Chair of Western Dales Bus. “This has not been an easy task”, he continued. “We have spent a great deal of time trying to create a timetable that balances local needs and those of visitors, as well as considering the hours our volunteer drivers have to put in.”

The bus offers an onward service for passengers arriving at Dent Station on the 9.15am train arrival from Leeds as well as dropping them off for the 5.34pm and 7.38pm trains to Leeds. The service connecting with the later train is on-request and involves a wait of just over half an hour at the station.

“We hope that all passengers appreciate the reasons behind these changes”, said Jock Cairns.

Western Dales Bus have also made other changes to services. The Tuesday service from Dent to Hawes, via Sedbergh, will no longer run owing to insufficient demand. The summer-only Sunday service from Dent Station to Cautley via Dent village and Sedbergh will also not run as meaningful connections with the new rail timetable are not possible. The Friday service from Dent village to Kirkby Stephen via Sedbergh has been extended to Brough as well as making changes to connect at Kirkby Stephen Station with the new timetable. The service now departs the village at the later time of 10.25am. There is now just one service back to Dent leaving Brough at 1.27pm, Kirkby Stephen at 1.36pm and Sedbergh at 2.04pm.

The Wednesday service from Cowgill to Kendal via Dent and Sedbergh, operated by Woofs, is unchanged.
